BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION & MARKETING The following are Career and Technical Education classes
offered in the Business Administration & Marketing pathway at DECA is a co-curricular professional organization for marketing, business, management, and entrepreneurship students. DECA's co-curricular programs and activity tools teach the practical skills of career preparation while encouraging exploration of career fields and providing actual experience in the world of work. DECA creates community and business-based partnerships benefiting the student and school and connects the importance of life-long learning with success.
Students involved in DECA at
DECA offers state and national recognition through competition in 30 occupational areas and awards more than $250,000 in scholarships each year. Plus, DECA focuses the student on defining his/her college and career goals and emphasizes the relevance of core studies. DECA is recognized by Congress and endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education.
Any of these classes fulfill a Career & Technical Education requirement. Career Choices Grades: 9-12 Prerequisite:
None Course Length: 1 semester (Qualifying course for Work-Based Learning, Simple Cravings Deli & Gifts, Screenprint & Embroidery, Print Shop) This course satisfies the Occupational Education credit required for graduation. Career Choices explores the world of work and explains how to succeed on your first job, future jobs, and your career. While in Career Choices, students will learn basic employability skills, standard business procedures, and how to market themselves as an effective employee. Practical and relevant real-world strategies are introduced for applying, interviewing, and obtaining a job in or after high school. This course also serves as a prerequisite for Cooperative Work-Site Learning (early release or late arrival as a senior) which enables students to receive high school credit for their part-time jobs. Financial Fitness – Qualifies for either
third-year math or CTE credit Grades: 11-12 Prerequisite:
None Course Length: 2 semesters Students will examine individual and family roles in the
economic system including how to maintain economic self-sufficiency through
financial planning and budgets; development of an investment portfolio; understanding
and computing the various forms of income; completion of a consumer research
project through the production of an Ad; understanding banking and financial
institutions; credit cards and interest; and risk management and insurance. Introduction to Marketing-College credit available with a B grade or higher Grades: 9-12 Prerequisite:
None Course Length: 1 semester Course Fee: None Introduction to Marketing is a course that teaches basic business and marketing concepts and the underlying business foundations required for the understanding and development of business. Elements such as distribution, financing, marketing information management, pricing, product/service management, promotion and selling along with the foundations of economics and communications are introduced in this course. Students are encouraged to join DECA (not required) and will have the opportunity to prepare and compete in DECA Area Competition (with a paid membership). Students will learn how to communicate in a professional work environment for a portion of their overall grade. Outstanding 1st semester students will be considered for employment 2nd semester (non-paid) in the Ram Shack if they provide a resume and two letters of recommendation.
Ram Shack/DECA Leadership Grades: 10-12 Prerequisite: Intro to Marketing Credit: 1 Course Length: 2 Semesters Course Fee: $25 (Covers WA State DECA yearly membership dues) Advanced Marketing has two main components - Community events and the school-based enterprise (Ram Shack Student Store). Students focus on wholesale and retail buying and selling operations and related careers. Advanced Marketing is a course that utilizes the Ram Shack student store as a learning laboratory. This course includes instruction and training in the principles of entrepreneurship, basic sales skills, cash handling procedures, basic accounting principles, customer service, and retail merchandising. During the 2nd semester in addition to working in the student store, students have the opportunity to develop a small business plan for their own entrepreneurship project. Involvement with DECA is required and business plans can be used in entrepreneurial competition at DECA Area, state or national levels.
